President George W. Bush stated last month in a White House press release regarding Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe, “No regime should ignore the will of its own people and calls from the international community without consequences.”
Back home, Capitol hill rages as the will of the people, speaking through elected congressional officials, is being not just ignored, but denied.
On July 31, U.S. District Judge John Bates was forced to issue a ruling to the effect that President Bush’s top advisors cannot stand immune to congressional subpoenas.
In a tribunal related to the separation of presidential powers, the District Court with Judge Bates presiding, denied “the Executive’s claim of absolute immunity,” (link to memorandum) and detailed the Administration argument “that the President’s closest advisors must be absolutely immune from compelled testimony before Congress.”
The White House did, however, respond directly to Washington journalist Ron Suskind’s allegation that the Administration faked a letter purporting to show a link between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda, according to the Associated Press, saying it would be “absurd” to direct anyone to forge a false letter.
Congress has been issuing subpoena after subpoena since April of last year to various members of the Bush Administration, including Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, in addition to Karl Rove, in an attempt to uncover various mysteries involving the neoconservatives; to no ultimate avail.
