The G8 recently held its first ever Agricultural Ministers’ Meeting in Treviso, Italy, which emphasized that investment in smallholder agriculture must head industrialized countries’ agendas “to grow the world economy out of recession,” according to the UN News Centre.
David Nabarro, Assistant Secretary-General and Coordinator of the UN System High-Level Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis, outlined elements of a two-track response that includes investing in food assistance and social safety nets for those most in need, as well as scaling up investment in agriculture.
